Stormwater rebates for Maryland yards

Two Maryland counties pay homeowners back for rain gardens, rain barrels, conservation landscaping and similar projects: up to $7,500 in Montgomery County and $6,000 in Prince George's. Most projects must be approved before you start.

Montgomery County: RainScapes

RainScapes Rewards pays up to $7,500 per home, and up to $20,000 for businesses, HOAs, apartment buildings and institutions.12 It covers rain gardens, conservation landscapes, water harvesting systems, green roofs, permeable pavement retrofits and pavement removal.1

  • Approve first. Projects installed before a site assessment and plan approval don’t qualify.1
  • Six months to build. You have six months from plan approval to install the project.1
  • Paid on receipts. The rebate is based on your receipts, up to the approved amount, after a final inspection. Checks usually arrive 8 to 12 weeks later.1

Not in Rockville, Gaithersburg or Takoma Park. RainScapes is for Montgomery County properties outside those three cities.1

Prince George's County: Rain Check

The Rain Check Rebate pays up to $6,000 over the life of a home, and up to $20,000 for commercial, industrial and institutional properties. You can do several projects until you reach the limit.3

Eight kinds of project qualify: rain barrels, cisterns, rain gardens, conservation landscaping, tree planting (urban tree canopy), pavement removal, permeable pavement and green roofs.3

  • Approve first. Everything except rain barrels must be pre-approved before installation.3
  • A year to finish. You have a year from the day you apply to complete the project.3
  • Paid by the county. After approval, the check usually arrives in 6 to 8 weeks.3

Not in the City of Bowie. Properties in Bowie aren’t eligible.3

Before you hire anyone

  • Apply and get approval before any digging, unless it’s only rain barrels.
  • Keep every receipt and invoice. Both programs pay on receipts.
  • Ask the landscaper whether they’ve built projects for the program before.
